What Is Saving?

Saving means keeping some of your money instead of spending it straight away. When you save, you are putting money aside so you can use it later. For example, if you get K10 and decide to put K5 into your savings can and keep K5 to spend, you are saving!

Why Is Saving Money Important?

Saving helps you get the things you really want in the future. Maybe you want a new storybook, a football, a toy or something special for your birthday. Instead of spending all your money today, you can save a little at a time until you have enough. Small savings can help you reach big dreams!

What Is a Saving Goal?

A savings goal is something you want to save money for. First, think about what you want. Then find out how much it costs and decide how much you can save each time you receive money.

For example:

🧒 My goal: I want to buy a football.
⚽ Football costs: K60
💰 I will save: K10 each week.

How should I choose what to buy?

When you have money, it can be exciting to buy something straight away. But before you spend, stop and think! Ask yourself: "Do I really need this?" "Do I really want this?" and "Will I still want it tomorrow?" You don't have to buy something just because you like it. Good money choices mean thinking carefully before you spend.

What is the difference between a need and a want?

A need is something important that we need to live, learn and stay healthy. Food, clean water, clothing and a safe home are examples of needs.

  • A want is something we would like to have, but we can live without it. Toys, sweets, games and extra treats are examples of wants.

  • 🍎 Food — NEED
    🧸 New toy — WANT
    👕 Clothes — NEED
    🍫 Chocolate — WANT

  • Before you spend, ask yourself: "Is it a need or a want?"
